Mark Mooney SBC Brewer

They say hindsight is always 20/20. If Mark had realized during his freshmen year of college that chemistry could not only be interesting but tasty, he might have been a chemistry major. Instead, he changed majors and completed a BS in archaeology. Mark’s extracurricular activities included Beer Appreciation 101. After graduation, Mark went to work digging holes in the backwoods and armpits of the Southeast. During this time, he began homebrewing with a coworker. After two years of subsurface exploration, Mark returned to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation. While writing his thesis, he found himself reading more about beer and brewing than dams and research. He began working at Five Points Growlers and Homebrew to supplement his meager savings and earn a discount on beer.

Employment at Five Points quickly increased Mark’s interest in brewing. He helped create the Five Points BrewU program and taught classes on homebrewing. Through these classes, Mark found a love for education and spreading the good beer cheer. With the support of family and friends, Mark enrolled in the Siebel Institute’s Associate Brewing Technology program. After completing the course he returned to Athens, ready to help make SBC a brewery focused on learning, teaching, and enjoying great craft beer.
